Day tour in Brisbane
|
|
Brought my family around for a day tour in Brisbane. We went up to Mt Cootha lookout point, enjoyed City Cat ride to Southbank, took pictures with the huge Christmas tree in front of cityhall, watched free Mermaid on Ice performance along Queen Street Mall....
basically hanging out and enjoying life in Brisbane for a day.
I am proud of the place where I lived for a year - and graduated from!
Thumbs up to Queensland@ Sunshine state!!!

Congratulations & Thumbs up Glad to be among the pride of achievers and excellence.
So, this lovely Friday morning, the "few of us" (Lai Min, Lai Kuen, Cheryl and myself) were invited for morning tea with HELP and UQ for a short get-together, catchup on uni life and mm...
more "pressure" to work hard for the coming finals, which begins this week.

Farewell Dinner for Steven....aww....
|
|
So hard to say farewell to a close Korean friend who's leaving us...
I got to meet Steven through Connor this year. Steven is so talented with the piano - he can play the piano so beautifully and sing together! Aww...
We played piano once together and it was soooo much fun. He taught me how duet "Chopsticks".
Oh, will never forget his cooking skills - memory of Korean BBQ at SouthBank for Tom's birthday lies freshly in my mind. And yea, Sunshine Coast trip during winter - he drove all the way north just to bunk with us for the night and celebrate Shahu's birthday on the beach.
Saying Goodbye is always the hardest - future is so uncertain when you can ever meet your friend again *sigh*
Pictures were taken during dinner yesterday. We had a nice, cosy dinner at Mongolian Sizzling BBQ restaurant at Taringa. Steven, wishing you all the best in Korea! We'll surely miss you!

College Year End Dinner at a "Secret Place" Location
|
|
Year End dinner was Awesome! College residents who are tentatively graduating (notice the term in BOLD) were given an invitation for a college year end dinner at a "Secret Place" location not specified beforehand. Doesn't it sound exciting and intriguing? Definitely!
Promptly at 6pm, we boarded a chartered bus outside Upland Road heading to a place we have no knowledge of whatsover beforehand. Approximately half hour later, we arrived at a quiet, slightly remote location at a Seafood Restaurant somewhere near Suncorp Stadium, (bypassing Roma Street). Woo.... seems posh!
Had some evening drinks before moving on to our respective tables for good food and classic, light jazz entertainment. As usual, a grand event surely will not go without speeches and some toasting.
Each resident was given a small Union College souvenir to bring home - something to remember about our college year here at Union. [I am blessed to be here this year ]
Oh, I haven't mentioned anything about the food!!!
We had seafood too.. salmon, oyster, prawns, chicken....
Desert went unrivalled to college desert, of course Tasty, rich cheesecake, Chocolate cake...fruit salad...oh my...just recalling them makes me hungry.
We had a superb night indeed! This is what COLLEGE life is!
New pictures! Taken from Kun Lin and Jackson's camera. Cheers guys!

Spring Purple Flowers at Uni! A sight 2 behold
|
|
Spring season!!! Lovely Purple Flowers all around Beautiful Brisbane. Could not resist joining my friends for some photo-taking this afternoon none other than our lovely grounds at UQ, St Lucia.
A sight to behold... if only we can stay and picnic at the park by the lake... that would be awesome. But...the beauty is not to be tampered with! There is this rumour about a taboo if the purple flower drops on your head - you will flunk the exams! Yikes!!!
Anyway, pix for rememberance.. happy viewing!
Yay! Finally, I know the correct spelling of the purple flower tree - JACARANDA
More details:
Jacaranda: Any plant of the genus Jacaranda (family Bignoniaceae), especially the two ornamental trees J. mimosifolia and J. cuspidifolia. Jacarandas are grown widely in warm parts of the world and in greenhouses for their showy blue or violet flowers and attractive, oppositely paired, compound leaves. The genus includes about 50 species native to Central and S. America and the W. Indies. The name is also applied to several tree species of the genera Machaerium and Dalbergia in the pea family (see legume), the sources of commercial rosewood. (The Britannica Concise Dictionary)

An event certainly worth going!! Away from the noisy central city of Brisbane, lies a peaceful, solitude Parkland behind one of the main train stations in Brisbane i.e. Roma Street Station.
Stephanie, a good pal from Buddhist Sunday School, and me made plans to visit this Multicultural Fest / yum cha on this beautiful Sunday.
Assorted variety of international food stalls - Greek, Thai, Malaysian, Danish, Hungarian..u name it!
We were entertained by a variety of international dances from around the globe.
Watching the dances was great entertainment .. but that didn't stop us from joining the Gypsy dance performance with everyone else! Dancing in circles with the crowd was AWESOME!
(Steph, hope u had great fun today! . Post me a comment here, ya?)

Loy Krathong Festival (Thai Festival) at UQ
|
|
Loy Krathong Festival at UQ lake. Rather quiet affair and not much publicity at uni.
Not really big... but there were some Thai dances, Thai Beauty pagent competitions going on stage, Thai food stalls... and the main highlight - lighting the "Kratong" and letting them go at the lake. I bought a Krathong and made a wish!
Sorry no pix of the Krathong. My Camera batteries FAILED me in such time of need. *Sigh*
Significance of Loy Krathong: (http://www.fortunecity.com/oasis/tuscany/893/krathong.html)
Loy Krathong--Festival of Lights. Loy means "to float" and krathong means "leaf cup." Throughout the Kingdom, millions of people fill rivers, streams, canals and lakes with small lotus-shaped floats, often made of banana leaves. These little vessels carry candles, incense and a small coin on their watery journeys. Custom suggests that no one will bother your little boat, although a small child will be allowed to liberate the coin and put it to more pragmatic use.
While the celebration had its origins in Sukhothai, Siam's first capital, about 800 years ago, the original meaning is unclear and subject of debate. Rural villagers feel the festival honors the River Goddess, as their lives depend so much on river water for drinking, washing and generally making a living. Some Buddhists commemorate Lord Buddha leaving his footprints on the banks of the Nammatha River during the full moon of the 12th month; thus they float lanterns in the water. Others believe the significance lies in the Brahmin tradition of floating away evil.
